Roller derby referees use standard whistles, verbal cues and hand signals so skaters, officials and spectators can understand what is happening on track.
Common whistle cues
- Jam start: one short whistle.
- Lead jammer: two rapid whistles.
- Penalty: one long whistle.
- Jam called off / ended: four rapid whistles.
- Period or game ended: a long rolling whistle.
