Listen for the whistles

Referees use standard whistle patterns alongside hand and verbal signals so skaters, officials and spectators can follow what is happening.

• Jam start: one short whistle.
• Lead jammer: two rapid whistles.
• Penalty: one long whistle.
• Jam called off / ended: four rapid whistles.
• Period or game ended: a long rolling whistle.
